Oil changes

DOHA, QATAR

Performing regular oil changes is essential for maintaining the health and longevity of a vehicle’s engine. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform an oil change:

  • Gather Supplies: You will need the following supplies:
    • Engine oil (check the vehicle’s manual for the recommended oil type and quantity)
    • Oil filter (ensure it matches the specifications for your vehicle)
    • Oil filter wrench
    • Socket wrench set
    • Oil drain pan
    • Funnel
    • Gloves and safety glasses
    • Jack and jack stands (if necessary)
  • Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down slightly. If the vehicle has been running, wait for a few minutes to let the oil settle.
  • Locate the Oil Drain Plug: The oil drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the engine oil pan. Refer to the vehicle’s manual or consult online resources to locate it if you’re unsure.
  • Prepare for Drainage: Place the oil drain pan beneath the oil drain plug to catch the old oil. Make sure the drain pan can hold the volume of oil expected to drain.
  • Remove the Oil Drain Plug: Using a socket wrench, carefully loosen the oil drain plug in a counterclockwise direction. Be cautious as the oil may be hot. Once loose, unscrew the drain plug completely by hand and allow the oil to drain into the pan.
  • Remove the Oil Filter: Locate the oil filter, which is usually positioned near the oil pan. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter in a counterclockwise direction. Once loosened, unscrew the filter by hand and allow any remaining oil to drain into the pan.
  • Prepare the New Oil Filter: Before installing the new oil filter, lubricate the rubber gasket on the filter with a small amount of fresh oil. This helps create a proper seal and makes it easier to remove during the next oil change.
  • Install the New Oil Filter: Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand in a clockwise direction. Tighten the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually by hand tightening plus an additional quarter to half turn.
  • Replace the Drain Plug: Once all the oil has drained from the engine, clean the drain plug and its threads with a rag. Then reinstall the drain plug and tighten it securely using a socket wrench.
  • Add New Oil: Use a funnel to pour the appropriate amount and type of new oil into the engine through the oil filler cap. Refer to the vehicle’s manual for the correct oil capacity.
  • Check Oil Level: After adding new oil, wait a few minutes for it to settle, then use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if necessary to bring it to the recommended level.
  • Dispose of Old Oil: Properly dispose of the old oil and oil filter at a designated recycling center or automotive service facility.
  • Record Maintenance: Keep a record of the oil change, including the date, mileage, type of oil used, and any other relevant details. This information helps track the vehicle’s maintenance schedule and can be useful for future reference.

Performing regular oil changes at the recommended intervals is crucial for preserving the engine’s performance and extending its lifespan. If you’re unsure about performing an oil change yourself, consider taking your vehicle to a trusted mechanic or oil change service center.
